THE HOUSEHOLD HEATMAP

WHERE EVERYDAY EXPOSURE HAPPENS

Explore how everyday products, materials and routines can create different types of exposure throughout the home — and what the evidence can tell us about them.

Exposure does not automatically mean harm. Risk depends on factors including substance, concentration, route, frequency and duration of exposure.

30-SECOND LABEL CHECK

HOW TRANSPARENT IS THIS LABEL?

Answer a few questions using the product packaging and the brand's website.

Base your answers on information you can actually find. This check evaluates disclosure and information availability — not product safety.

LABEL CHECK 0 / 4
01
Can you easily find the complete ingredient list?
Look beyond front-of-pack “hero” or “key” ingredients.
HOW TO CHECK Check the packaging and the product page for the full ingredient declaration.
WHY THIS MATTERS

Easy access to the complete ingredient declaration makes a formulation easier to evaluate.

EXAMPLE
A full INCI list is displayed on the product page rather than only selected highlighted ingredients.
02
If fragrance is used, does the brand provide useful additional information?
Look for relevant fragrance information rather than assuming fragrance presence alone determines product quality.
HOW TO CHECK Check whether the brand provides meaningful fragrance context where applicable.
WHY THIS MATTERS

Additional fragrance information can help consumers understand what is being communicated beyond the word “Parfum” or a fragrance claim.

EXAMPLE
The brand explains the fragrance type or provides relevant disclosure alongside the ingredient list.
03
Is the packaging free from vague claims such as “chemical-free” or unexplained “toxin-free” statements?
Look for specific, verifiable language rather than broad terms that do not clearly identify what is being claimed.
HOW TO CHECK Review front-of-pack badges, claims and marketing statements.
WHY THIS MATTERS

Clear, specific claims are easier to verify than broad fear-based language.

EXAMPLE
A brand identifies the specific ingredient or standard behind a claim instead of using an undefined “chemical-free” statement.
04
Does the brand explain why its ingredients are used?
A function or purpose statement can make the formulation easier for consumers to understand.
HOW TO CHECK Look for ingredient functions, plain-English explanations or formulation information.
WHY THIS MATTERS

Explaining ingredient purpose provides useful context beyond simply listing ingredient names.

EXAMPLE
The brand identifies glycerin as a humectant or explains why a preservative is included in the formulation.
